Spotlight CardSpotLight Trawl is a fun way to start a conversation, while engaging a group.

The Pack - The standard 30-card SpotLight pack is placed in the middle of a table in a pile (remove any cards that might be inappropriate or not relevant).

The Play

Choose a person to start play by having them pick up a card and then answering the card to the best of his or her ability. Allow the group to add to the conversation as appropriate and time allows. Upon completion, the person that drew the card can name the next person to draw a card or it can follow in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. The number of individuals that drew cards will be determined by the allotted time for the session.

From these cards, each individual gets to present and discuss one card in their hand to the group. Follow-up discussions are to be moderated by a designated facilitator. It’s encouraged that every participant be provided an opportunity to present their card of choice to the group.

Variation - Upon dealing the cards out to participants, have each participant trade one card to the person on their right (or left). Upon completion of the pass, they can decide which SpotLight Card to present to the group.

SpotLight Prep is an easy and effective way to prepare for a meeting or a presentation. Simply use a specific SpotLight Card deck as if they were flashcards. Thumb through the cards individually, identifying key themes and concepts that you would like to have addressed in a meeting. They can also be used to reflect on how you or your organization are doing in a specific area. If you choose, there is a yellow circle on the card face if you choose to number them for future reference.
